Al sinds 1981 heeft Ashley “Ash” J. Williams – onnavolgbaar gespeeld door Bruce Campbell – het in de The Evil Dead-franchise aan de stok met de demonische deadites. Maar Campbell is inmiddels bijna 65 en na verschillende films, games en televisieseries is het tijd om het “boomstickje” over te dragen aan een nieuwe generatie. In 2013 verscheen er al een remake en met Evil Dead Rise slaan we nu een nieuw hoofdstuk van de necronomicon – het boek van de doden – open. Dirk was er al sinds de eerste film bij en ging ook voor deze nieuwe horrorfilm naar de bioscoop. Lees zijn Evil Dead Rise recensie!

Een Sam Raimi en Bruce Campbell productie

Modern Myths collega André heeft al eerder het origineel uit 1981 van regisseur Sam Raimi en acteur Bruce Campbell besproken op 4K UHD. Wil je meer weten over het deel waarmee het allemaal is begonnen, lees dan zeker zijn The Evil Dead 4K UHD recensie.

Raimi en Campbell produceren nu dit nieuwe Evil Dead hoofdstuk en Campbell speelt zelfs nog een, soort van, cameo. The Evil Dead wordt nog steeds gezien als een van de beste horrorfilms aller tijden en dat is natuurlijk moeilijk te overtreffen.

Evil Dead Rise recensie – Ode aan het origineel

Regisseur Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground, 50 States of Fright) laat er dan ook geen gras over groeien. Nog voor de begintitel op het scherm verschijnt, krijgen we een stukje “old school” Evil Dead te zien, dat een ode is aan het origineel. Daarna wordt er wat gas teruggenomen en wordt het verhaal opgebouwd.

Beth (Lilly Sullivan (Mental, Barkskins)) gaat op bezoek bij haar zus Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland (The Devil Wears Prada, Vikings, The Mist)) die alleen met haar drie kinderen woont. Een aardbeving maakt een gat in de parkeergarage waar het gezin woont. Hierin vindt Ellies zoon, Danny (Morgan Davies (The Hunter)), een mysterieus boek en een aantal langspeelplaten (die we tegenwoordig “vinyl” noemen). Als hij het boek opent en de platen met enge spreuken afspeelt, gaat het mis. Een angstaanjagende entiteit heeft het voorzien op het gezin en de andere bewoners uit de flat. Het is het begin van een nachtmerrie waarin niets en niemand wordt gespaard.

Vervolg of nieuw begin?

Ik weet niet precies waar ik Evil Dead Rise moet plaatsen tussen de andere films. Deze film sluit niet aan op de klassieke trilogie en ook niet op de remake. Ik denk dat je de film daarom maar het beste kan zien als een zelfstandige film, hoewel er genoeg verwijzingen worden gemaakt naar de eerdere delen.

Net als in Evil Dead uit 2013, gebruikt regisseur Lee Cronin veel “gore” en liters bloed. Ik heb me soms met verbazing afgevraagd hoe sommige scènes door de keuring zijn gekomen. Eigenlijk is het antwoord simpel. De makers hoeven namelijk geen compromissen te sluiten met studio’s. De film hoeft uiteindelijk ook geen spannende horrorfilm te worden voor een zo groot mogelijk publiek. Evil Dead Rise is er voor de horrorfans. En dus moet je tegen bloed en andere ellende kunnen.

Kinderen voor kinderen

Net als in de Fast and the Furious-franchise, draait het in Evil Dead Rise om “family”. Hiermee weet de film zich te onderscheiden van de eerdere delen. De slachtoffers zijn nu eens geen kamperende jongeren die worden bezeten. Dit keer moet een gezin met jonge kinderen de strijd aangaan met de demonen. Dat is een opmerkelijke keuze, want in Amerika zijn ze over het algemeen wel voorzichtig als het gaat om horror en kinderen.

Maar opnieuw bewijzen de makers dat Evil Dead gewoon een R-rating (17+) moet krijgen voor het bloederige horrorgeweld, de gore en vanwege het kleine beetje harde taalgebruik. In Nederland doen we hier nooit zo moeilijk over als de makers behoorlijk de grens opzoeken.

Evil Dead Rise recensie – Bij vlagen ongemakkelijk

Ik kan me nog zo goed herinneren dat ik me als tiener erg ongemakkelijk voelde tijdens en na het kijken van The Evil Dead. De spanning bleef zelfs na de aftiteling van de film hangen in de donkere huiskamer. Dit gevoel kwam een paar keer terug bij het kijken van Evil Dead Rise, maar blijft dit keer niet zo lang hangen.

De film weet wel de humor en hysterie van het origineel te evenaren, maar niet te overtreffen. Zelfs niet met de speciale effecten van tegenwoordig. Dus kun je tegen een beetje bloed en duivelse demonen? En laat je je niet afschrikken door een waar splatterfestijn? Dan is Evil Dead Rise zeker een bezoek aan de bioscoop waard!

Dirk kreeg zijn eerste Suske en Wiske toen hij vijf jaar was. Vanaf dat moment is de liefde voor strips begonnen en nooit meer over gegaan. Naast Europese strips leest hij net zo graag comics en manga. In de jaren 80 kwam daar een nieuwe liefde bij: film. Dirk was vaste klant in de videotheek en keek het liefst actie, fantasy, horror, anime en sciencefiction. Tegenwoordig vindt hij nog steeds alles leuk, maar moet hij zijn kostbare tijd verdelen. Films komen daarbij op de eerste plaats, op de voet gevolgd door strips en mocht er tijd over zijn dan slingert hij de PlayStation 3 aan.
